Celebrate the Constitution with a Soapbox Challenge!

Purpose:

To help students understand and reflect on the values and impact of the U.S. Constitution by expressing their opinions on important civic topics.


Theme:

"What part of the Constitution matters most to me—and why?"

Alternate versions (depending on class focus):

  • “Why the Constitution still matters today.”

  • “If I could add one amendment, what would it be?” (Great for young learners)
     

Learning Objectives


By participating, students will:

  • Understand key concepts of the U.S. Constitution (rights, amendments, principles of democracy).

  • Practice constructing a clear, reasoned argument.

  • Build confidence in public speaking and civic expression.

 

Structure: Here are two options to consider 

  1. Written Essay: Students draft responses to one or more prompts (scroll down), and volunteers are invited to read their essays out loud to the class. This is a great option for a classroom activity.
    TIPS:

Encourage the use of personal examples or current events.

Provide sentence starters:

“The part of the Constitution I care most about is…”

“This right matters to me because…”

“If I could add a new amendment, it would be…”

2. Soapbox Speech Event

  • Students prepare speeches and practice the presentation before the event.

  • It is up to the organizers to select the prompts to use (scroll down for suggestions).

  • Each speaker gets a turn on the "soapbox" (use a small box, mat, or stand up front).

    Some schools have hosted video events, with students submitting their entries in a video. This option may work for you using YouTube or Google Drive to host. 

     

Judging (Optional)

Use a friendly rubric or vote on categories like:

  • Most Passionate

  • Most Persuasive

  • Most Original

  • Best Use of the Constitution
     

Use certificates rather than competitive grades to encourage all voices.
 

Materials Needed:

  • Printed mini-Constitution or key excerpts (several video resources are posted here)

  • Soapbox sign or stand 

  • Speech worksheet (PDF) or lined paper

  • Timer

  • Optional: Certificates or small prizes
     

Sample Prompts (Pick One or Offer a Choice):

  • What is one constitutional right you would stand up for?

  • What part of the Constitution inspires you?

  • If you could change the Constitution, what would you change and why?

  • What does freedom mean to you?
     

Teacher Tips:

  • Model a short soapbox speech first.

  • Emphasize listening respectfully to each speaker.

  • Allow students to opt-in to speak aloud (or record if shy).

 

Samples:

Anaheim Union High School District has earned several Civic Learning Awards for achievements that include Soapbox events. Their annual competitions should inspire others to bring soapboxes to their school!
