OBJECTIVES

- Apply the Fourth Amendment and case precedent to specific case.
- Weigh issues of public safety/security with individual rights from a constitutional framework.
- Determine the flow of a case throughout the state courts.
This lesson is best for:
Older students discussing digital privacy and search and seizure, the Bill of Rights, the 4th Amendment, and landmark cases that started in California.
PREP NEEDED
Some volunteers report the lesson is too long for 1-hour. Judges should review the suggested talking points ahead of time to gain an idea of what the lesson entails. If the content sparks debate or dialogue with the class, time will expire quickly!
The beginning of this lesson presents the 3-branches. This is material the teacher can cover prior to your visit (leaving you more time for the case and Q&A). Be sure to review or test their knowledge of the three branches before moving to the case.
