2016 CA Civic Learning Awards now celebrate all grade spans

This year the successful Civic Learning award program was expanded to include all grade spans, from elementary through high school. Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson started the K-12 Civic Learning Awards four years ago to recognize schools for their creative and effective implementation of the recommendations from the California Task Force on K-12 Civic Learning.

Local School Districts Embrace K-12 Civic Learning Recommendations

In February, the Power of Democracy Steering Committee under the leadership of Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell formed pilot Civic Learning Partnerships in counties throughout the state, bringing together local leaders from business, law and education to develop and implement plans to promote K-12 civic learning in their communities. In just several months, these pilot partnerships have demonstrated how local commitment, leadership and collaboration can translate ideas to action.

Leaders and Students throughout California Gather to Show Support for Civic Learning

At the first Civic Learning Partnership kickoff on February 5th in Chico, the partnership announced that Biggs USD had passed a resolution calling for integration of the Six Proven Practices into instructional practice and school life. The Butte County partnership has committed to a goal of seeking passage of a resolution by all 13 Butte County school districts by May 2015!
