By Hon. Alex Padilla, California Secretary of State
I am proud to join Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and the Power of Democracy Steering Committee in promoting civic learning and engagement opportunities for California’s youth. Students are the future of our democracy.
As the state’s chief elections officer, I recently announced a new online tool for 16 and 17 year olds to pre-register to vote. The resource is for those students who are eligible, and registration activates when they turn 18. To help students prepare for their role as voters, two weeks in September and April are designated as Voter Education Weeks in our public high schools.
At the California Civic Learning Summit in February, a standing room only crowd of business, education, legal, and civic leaders examined the current status of civic learning for K-12 students, and looked at next steps. With resources like online voter preregistration for 16 and 17 year olds, California is continuing to provide meaningful and accessible civic engagement opportunities for students.
